Vectrex

R.E.S.C.U.E

Remote Exploration & Sub-surface Cavern Utility Expert. Strap on the propeller backpack, fly down through the caverns, blast your way past walls and creatures, and bring the trapped miner home — a tribute to Activision's H.E.R.O. (1984).

// The mission

One miner, deep underground

Every level has a miner trapped somewhere below. Between you and them: bats, spiders and snakes, and walls that only dynamite gets through. The propeller backpack keeps you in the air, and it drains fuel the whole time you fly.

The laser clears the creatures in a straight line. Dynamite goes down where you stand — step away before it blows. Reach the miner, and the fuel you have left becomes your bonus.

The footage at the top is recorded from the ROM running in an emulator of the Vectrex: the game's own demo, playing by itself.

Drawn in light, room by room

The caverns are vector lines on the Vectrex's black tube: floors, ceilings and shafts, the creatures and the rescuer all traced by the electron beam, at four levels of brightness.
